"To cross safely the flood of "Birth-Death-Continuum", the Sathya Sai Seva Samithi called Nishta or discipline of an unflinching kind is essential. It must be sturdy, a safe bridge or else you will fall into the raging waters and be drawn into the sea, infested with the sharks: Lust and Anger. See how great heroes like Prahalada did not lose their hold on the Lord, in spite of heavy odds. Prahalada never gave up the repetition of the Name of the Lord, though he was tortured, twisted and burnt. One must have that determination and faith" ;- Sri Sathya Sai Baba
Devotion is one of the three wings of the Sai Organization (the other two being selfless service (seva) and education in human values). This page and sub-pages will discuss various aspect of the devotion program, which includes devotional singing (bhajans), study circles, prayers, and meditation.
The Sathya Sai Baba Organization provides many activities for participants to enable them to achieve the goal of life. Common to all activities, (service, spiritual effort and education in human values) is the cultivation of the understanding of our own nature, and of our goal in life. Both these aims are achieved in the Sai Organization by strengthening our capacity to love all people in every different station in life, and to love people of different races, castes, creeds and religions.
To this end, in the Sai Organization, the spiritual or devotion wing provides spiritual activities such as devotional singing, weekly readings from Sai literature, study circle and reflection, meditation, regional workshops on various spiritual topics, the company of the good and godly, prayers and unity of faiths events.
Take up Spiritual Activity
Sathya Sai Baba advises us that it is our duty to take up spiritual activities and to show the rising generation of youth by our lives that spiritual effort and study have made us more joyful and courageous in the adventure called life. Children and youth learn from the behavior of parents, and always imitate their elders. A good example by their elders leads to this behavior being emulated by the children.
Sai Baba teaches us that it is the responsibility of all pious men and women, parents and grandparents, to demonstrate in and through their lives that piety is not weakness but strength; that it opens up a vast spring of power and that a person with faith in God can overcome obstacles much more easily than a person who does not have faith in God.
Our Devotion Wing
The Spiritual Wing of the Sri Sathya Sai Baba Center of Bridgewater serves to promote and emphasize the universal principles and teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, and to allow each individual to transform themselves in a spiritual manner.
Study Circle allows for the individual to probe and explore spiritual topics and concepts, and come away with a better understanding of them through open forum style presentations. These may take the form of monthly study circles, all-day seminars conducted by center members, and talks from special guest speakers from outside the center.
Devotional Singing or Bhajans allows for the congregation to jointly recite the many names given to God by all faiths of the world.Devotional singing takes place weekly as part of our weekly program from 3:00 PM - 6:15 PM on Sundays. All center members have the opportunity to sing because the center conducts singing practice every week to help center members improve their devotional expression to God. More
Celebrations allow for all center members, from the youngest to the oldest, to utilize whatever talents they may have, in organizing, developing, and maintaining the celebrations which occur on an annual and occasional basis. In doing this, center members are working towards the common goal of putting Sri Sathya Sai Baba's message into further practice.

Quotes from Sathya Sai Baba on Devotional Singing (Bhajans)
Sing aloud the glory of God and charge the atmosphere with divine adoration . . . This is why I insist on group singing of the names of the Lord. (SSS, VI, 239)
Devotional singing (bhajan) is one of the processes by which you can train the mind to expand into eternal values. Teach the mind to revel in the glory and majesty of God; wean it away from petty horizons of pleasure . . . Devotional singing induces in you a desire for experiencing the truth, to glimpse the beauty that is God, to taste the bliss that is the Self. It encourages man to dive into himself and be genuinely his real Self. (SSS VII, 497-498)
Devotional singing (bhajan) is a spiritual practice (sadhana) for all who share in it. (Sai Bhajana Mala, 30)
Remember, every song sung in praise of the Lord is a sword that cuts the knots of laziness. It is a fine piece of social service to remind all of their duty to the Almighty, who watches over them. (The Holy Man and the Psychiatrist, by Sam Sandweiss134)
People say that when you go to Sai Baba, there is nothing but devotional singing (bhajan). Realize that there is nothing greater than bhajan. What bliss is there in bhajans! What a demonstration of oneness is it when a myriad throats join in uttering the name of God! The vibrations emanating from them make the heart vibrant. If you sing alone in your shrine, the vibrations return to you as a reaction. But in community singing, what you have is not a reaction but a wave of vibrations. They enter into the atmosphere and purify the polluted air. The atmosphere today is polluted by bad thoughts and feelings. When you sing the glory of God, the bad germs in the air are destroyed and the air gets purified by a treatment of anti-biotics, as it were. (SS, Jan. 1995, 26)
When all the participants in a bhajan sing in unison, what sacred vibrations are produced and what Divine energies are released! When these vibrations fill the world, what changes cannot they bring about! When one sings alone, the heart is merged in the song. But when many sing together, it acquires a Divine power. (Sai Bhajana Mala, 30)
